The Boston Marathon, running, cycling, boating and fitness activities:

Just around the corner from the Newbury Guest House is the finish line of the Boston Marathon. The oldest marathon in the country, this 26-mile race attracts world-class runners from around the globe as well as hundreds of thousands of fans. During the weeks before the Marathon, you may find yourself jogging alongside runners-in-training along the Charles River Esplanade.

The Charles River Esplanade is minutes away from the Newbury Guest House and offers scenic jogging and biking paths along the Emerald Necklace, so called for the green spaces that line the Charles River. This chain of parks along the river was designed by Frederick Law Olmsted, who also designed New York City's largest green space, Central Park.

The Esplanade is also home to the Hatch Shell. The annual Fourth of July Fireworks, accompanied by the music of the Boston Pops, and many other free concerts and events are held here throughout the summer.

Sailing on the Charles River offers panoramic views of Boston and Cambridge. Kayaks, windsurfs and sailboats may be rented at the Community Boating Center on the Esplanade.

If biking is your preference, Boston Bike Tours specializes in a variety of bicycle tours. However, if you prefer to explore on your own, you can always rent a bike at Back Bay Bicycle.

For those who prefer going to a gym, area clubs offer day rates that range from $10 (at the YMCA which is a ten minute walk from Newbury Guest House) to $15 (at Fitcorp, across the street) to $20 (at Boston Sports Club, one block away.)

Last but not least, Boston is a walking city. Lace on your most comfortable shoes and you will find yourself endlessly wandering throughout the city, losing track of the miles of ground you've covered. After a long day of discovering what Boston has to offer, return to Newbury Guest House and rest your feet in the lobby while you gaze out through the bay windows onto Newbury Street, or enjoy a sunset cocktail on our patio.
